Elf on the shelf is such a cute tradition! I don't think it's too early to put up your Christmas tree -- if that is what you always do. I'm personally used to putting it up the day after Thanksgiving. :)
We usually put ours up Thanksgiving evening. I'm just extra excited this year ;)
I love Elf on the Shelf! Ours is Bob and he'll be coming from the North Pole tomorrow; my kids love the mischief he causes!
